According to the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology (KIIS), 57% of Ukrainians hold a pragmatic view, asserting that every nation has the right to its own heroes without foreign interference. Another 33% believe that joint historical commissions, rather than political actors, should establish a shared understanding of the past.<\/p>\n
Researchers noted that this moderate approach is consistent across all Ukrainian regions. Only a small fraction of respondents favored confrontational responses regarding history.<\/p>\n
Measured on a seven-point social distance scale, the attitude of Ukrainians toward Poles has remained relatively tolerant, though it fluctuated from a score of 3.7 in 2021 to a record-high closeness of 2.9 in 2023 following Poland’s extensive support during the Russian invasion. In 2025, the indicator reached 4.1, which researchers attribute to tensions such as border blockades.<\/p>\n
Despite these fluctuations, there are no significant anti-Polish sentiments in Ukrainian society. Even after Polish election campaigns featured anti-Ukrainian rhetoric, attitudes toward Poles remained stable, and a majority of Ukrainians would support sending troops to Poland in the event of Russian aggression.<\/p>\n
KIIS director Anton Hrushetsky stated that the majority of Ukrainians want to depoliticize history to prevent it from serving political interests. He emphasized that Russia benefits from conflicts between Ukrainians and Poles, and therefore, historical matters should be left to specialists.<\/p>\n
Hrushetsky noted that Ukrainian society is prepared to follow a path of mutual forgiveness and reconciliation. The study was conducted from June 17-23, 2025, via telephone interviews with 1,005 citizens across Ukraine, excluding occupied territories.<\/p>\n
