The Port of Gdynia has concluded a multi-stage strategic expansion project, deepening its basins and renovating quays to accommodate 400-meter container vessels and bolster its standing in international supply chains. <\/p>\n
The Port of Gdynia has completed a major infrastructure project aimed at modernizing its technical parameters to meet the demands of modern shipping and increasing container volumes. Co-financed by the European Union through the Cohesion Fund, this initiative significantly enhances the port’s navigational and operational capabilities.<\/p>\n
The investment, spanning from 2014 to 2026, totaled approximately 1.28 billion PLN gross, with 273 million PLN provided by the EU. It marks a critical step in integrating Gdynia more deeply into international supply chains.<\/p>\n
The modernization involved dredging the Port Canal and port basins to a depth of -16 meters. Additionally, the inner port entrance was widened by 40 meters, and several key quays\u2014including the Norwegian, Slovak, and Italian wharves\u2014were reconstructed to support the increased draft.<\/p>\n
The Indian Quay also underwent a 536-meter reconstruction, featuring a new railway track and improved handling equipment. These upgrades allow for faster, more efficient operations and the handling of larger bulk cargo vessels.<\/p>\n
A central challenge of the project was the expansion of Turning Basin No. 2 to a diameter of 480 meters. This required building a new dock cavity and relocating the Polish Armaments Group (PGZ) Naval Shipyard\u2019s floating dock, a complex operation successfully completed in April 2025.<\/p>\n
In February 2026, the reconstructed Helskie Quay was commissioned. Nearly 800 meters long and deepened to 15.4 meters, it is now capable of servicing the largest container ships currently operating in the Baltic Sea, which measure up to 400 meters in length.<\/p>\n
This expansion has increased the port\u2019s annual handling capacity by approximately 5 million tons. In 2025, even while construction was ongoing, the port achieved a record of over 1 million TEU handled in a single year.<\/p>\n
The project serves as a cornerstone of Gdynia\u2019s long-term development strategy.
