The Polish Sejm has passed legislation aimed at eradicating dangerous, medically unfounded health services from the market and the internet, granting the Patient Ombudsman significant new powers to intervene against practitioners. <\/p>\n
The amendment passed with 232 votes in favor and 34 against, while 162 parliamentarians abstained. The bill received backing from the ruling coalition, including the Civic Coalition, The Left, PSL, and Poland 2050, alongside the Razem parliamentary group.<\/p>\n
Opposition came from the Confederation and the Confederation of the Polish Crown. Members of Law and Justice (PiS) largely abstained from the vote, with only seven members voting against the proposal.<\/p>\n
Drafted by the Ministry of Health, the law empowers the Patient Ombudsman to issue public warnings against individuals whose practices threaten patient safety. The Ombudsman is also granted authority to issue interim decisions requiring the immediate cessation of such activities.<\/p>\n
Furthermore, the Ombudsman may request the initiation of civil proceedings and participate in them with the same rights as a prosecutor.
