Commemorations in Kielce marked the 80th anniversary of the 1946 anti-Jewish pogrom, as Poland’s Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich called for unity and remembrance of both the victims and their defenders.<\/p>\n

The commemorations continued with a “Memory Evening” at the \u015awi\u0119tokrzyska Philharmonic and a “Heritage” concert at the Cathedral Basilica, featuring a world premiere of music composed by Szymon Golec set to poems by Bogdan Bia\u0142ek.<\/p>\n
The pogrom was ignited by a false report from eight-year-old Henryk B\u0142aszczyk, who claimed to have been held in a cellar at the 7 Planty Street building, which housed the Jewish Committee. Despite local militia finding no such cellar, rumors spread throughout Kielce that Jewish people were kidnapping and murdering children for ritual purposes.<\/p>\n
Tensions surged as an aggressive crowd gathered, and the arrival of a militia patrol was perceived as an attempt to protect the Jewish residents. The violence escalated when shots were fired inside the building, leading to soldiers, militia, and eventually local factory workers joining the assault on the Jewish inhabitants.<\/p>\n
According to the Institute of National Remembrance (IPN), 37 Polish citizens of Jewish nationality and three Poles who tried to assist them were killed on July 4, 1946, with 35 Jews wounded. Other researchers suggest the death toll reached 40 or 42 victims.<\/p>\n
Post-war legal proceedings resulted in multiple trials involving 49 individuals, including military personnel and civilians. While several were sentenced to death in the initial trials, subsequent judicial processes saw varying sentences, including life imprisonment and acquittals for some local security officials.<\/p>\n
For decades, the Polish People’s Republic (PRL) suppressed the memory of the pogrom. Various narratives emerged over time, including claims of provocations by security forces to distract from political issues or accusations against the anti-communist underground.<\/p>\n
A 13-year IPN investigation concluded in 2004 without pinning specific blame, describing the event as a spontaneous tragedy fueled by the negative attitude of locals toward Jews. Historian Professor Joanna Tokarska-Bakir, however, documented a broader climate of post-war antisemitism and physical violence against Jews that characterized the era across Poland.<\/p>\n
