Following 13 years of negotiation, the European Parliament has approved new air passenger regulations that simplify compensation claims, protect family seating, and enforce greater transparency in ticket and baggage pricing. <\/p>\n
The reform maintains existing compensation rights, allowing passengers to claim between 250 and 600 euros for flights delayed by at least three hours, cancellations within 14 days of departure, or denied boarding. <\/p>\n
Procedures for claiming compensation are being streamlined. Carriers must notify passengers electronically within 96 hours of arrival if they are eligible for compensation and provide clear instructions on how to file a claim. Refunds for tickets must be processed automatically if the passenger chooses a reimbursement over an alternative flight. Passengers now have nine months to submit claims, while airlines have 30 days to pay or provide a justified refusal.<\/p>\n
The reform introduces approximately 30 new passenger rights. Parents traveling with children under 14 are guaranteed seats next to each other at no extra cost. Airlines are prohibited from charging fees to correct minor name errors or for passengers who carry printed rather than digital boarding passes.<\/p>\n
The practice of “no-show” cancellations, where subsequent segments of a journey are invalidated because a passenger missed an earlier flight, will be abolished.<\/p>\n
Airlines and booking platforms must now disclose the total price of tickets, including cabin baggage costs, at the beginning of the booking process. Passengers maintain the right to carry one personal item, such as a small backpack or handbag, free of charge.<\/p>\n
