Head of Prime Minister’s Office confirms Tusk has not been formally invited to discuss the SAFE program with the President.
No Formal Invitation Received
On Thursday evening, March 5, Grabiec stated on TVN24 that there has been no official invitation for talks between the Prime Minister and the President. He added that no date for such a meeting has been set, with the only information coming from Wednesday’s press conference by Nawrocki.
Grabiec stated: “If it were to be political theater consisting of giving more general statements like at the conference, aimed at leading the President to veto the SAFE program, then we do not want to participate in this theater.”
What is “Polish SAFE 0 percent”?
The “Polish SAFE 0 percent” would be financed with the help of the National Bank of Poland. Glapiński stated that the alternative to SAFE “will not be associated with any financial interest,” and the central bank does not plan to finance the proposal with “any part of the NBP reserves” as their transfer would be against the law. The created funds are to be transferred to the Armed Forces Support Fund.
Donald Tusk’s Appeal
On Thursday, Donald Tusk in a video posted on X appealed to the President to sign the law implementing the SAFE program as soon as possible. He also requested precise information from the NBP president on the bank’s financial capabilities and details of the “SAFE 0 percent” proposal. Tusk emphasized that the current political situation in the world “requires the highest seriousness and responsibility,” adding: “There is no question of any political games.”
EU SAFE Program
Poland is set to be the biggest beneficiary of the EU loan program SAFE, potentially receiving approximately 43.7 billion euros, which is nearly 200 billion złoty. According to government declarations, 89% of the SAFE funds are to go to Polish defense companies. The money is to be used to strengthen Poland’s security, including meeting military needs, supporting police and Border Guard, and protecting cyberspace.
