Poczobut Released: Polish Politicians Dispute Credit for Securing Freedom

Polish-Belarusian journalist Andrzej Poczobut has been released, sparking a political debate in Poland over who deserves credit for the operation.

Government Highlights Role of Services and Diplomacy

The Polish government emphasizes the role played by its intelligence services, diplomats, and foreign partners in securing Andrzej Poczobut’s release.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk initially announced Poczobut’s freedom with a brief message, later detailing the two-year diplomatic effort culminating in the border exchange.

Tusk Credits International Assistance

Tusk attributed the successful outcome to the “excellent work” of Polish services, diplomats, and prosecutors, alongside significant assistance from American, Romanian, and Moldovan allies. He shared Poczobut’s first words upon release: “Will I be able to return there?” – to which Tusk responded, “Only you decide. You are a free man.”

Foreign Minister Sikorski Reports Poczobut’s Condition

Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski reported that Poczobut is “exhausted but in good condition” after a brief conversation. He stated that “all of Poland is rejoicing in his freedom” and affirmed, “We do not abandon our own.”

Defense Minister: Lukashenko Yields to Pressure

Deputy Prime Minister and Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz asserted that the Lukashenko regime only concedes under pressure, and Poczobut’s release demonstrates the effectiveness of firm policy and international cooperation. Other government politicians expressed their joy with brief statements.

US and Presidential Palace Emphasize Trump’s Role

A US State Department spokesperson hailed Poczobut’s release as a “historic diplomatic achievement,” attributing it to the effectiveness of Donald Trump’s administration’s “tough diplomacy.” The spokesperson highlighted intensive US diplomatic efforts led by special envoy Coale, and thanked Poland, Moldova, and Romania for their cooperation.

The US also expressed readiness for further engagement with Belarus to secure the release of other political prisoners.

President Nawrocki Thanks Trump

President Karol Nawrocki celebrated Poczobut’s freedom, thanking President Donald Trump for his involvement in securing the release and acknowledging all those who contributed to the success.

PiS Acknowledges Release, Criticizes Past Government Decisions

While also welcoming Poczobut’s release, the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party criticized the current government, claiming the opportunity for his release existed months ago during prisoner exchanges in Ankara, but was “missed” by the Tusk government. PiS leader Jarosław Kaczyński acknowledged the importance of the Polish-American alliance.

Mariusz Kamiński also expressed joy, stating he had advocated for Poczobut’s release both as a minister and in the European Parliament, adding that a full assessment of the circumstances would come later.
