Poland 2050 Faces Leadership Crisis as Hołownia May Miss Crucial Meeting

Poland 2050 leadership crisis intensifies as party debates repeat elections with leader potentially absent due to travel.

National Council Meeting Approaches

On Monday evening, Poland 2050’s National Council will reconvene online to continue interrupted discussions about the party leadership elections. The council must decide whether to repeat only the invalidated second round between Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz and Paulina Hennig-Kloska, or to restart the entire election process.

Hołownia’s Potential Absence

Szymon Hołownia may not attend the crucial meeting, scheduled for 18:00, as he will be returning from a foreign trip by plane. “I suspect he might not make it,” admits one of the current leader’s collaborators.

Contested Election Results

On January 12, in a runoff for party leadership, two ministers faced off: Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz and Paulina Hennig-Kloska. The competition was left unresolved due to voting system problems. Poland 2050 believes the climate and environment minister was the favorite in the second round, and her supporters want only that round repeated.

Co-Leadership Proposal

However, on Monday, Pełczyńska-Nałęcz took the initiative by proposing a new model for party leadership – co-chairing with Hennig-Kloska. Additionally, this decision would be made not by the National Council but by a broader body – the National Congress.

Party Divided Over Proposal

The minister’s proposal irritated many Poland 2050 politicians. “Kaśka went ahead without consulting. She didn’t coordinate this with Paulina; it’s solely her initiative. Paulina won’t agree,” says a party source. “Kaśka is fighting for her political life because she knows she might lose the elections,” adds the source. “A cry of desperation,” comments another.

Not all Poland 2050 members are as critical of the head of the Ministry of Funds and Regional Policy. “Any initiative that aims to ensure unity and cooperation in the party is valuable,” says club chairman Paweł Śliz.

Statutory Obstacles

Opponents of Pełczyńska-Nałęcz point out that implementing co-leadership would require changing the party’s statutes, which they believe would create additional chaos in an already difficult internal situation. “There won’t be agreement on this,” we hear from one parliamentarian.

Most Likely Scenario

The most probable scenario, according to our sources, is repeating only the second round of elections. “Repeating the entire elections would mean starting from scratch: candidate registration, internal campaigns, regional visits, and voting. Pointless, there’s no time left for that,” evaluates a Poland 2050 politician.

Hołownia Withdraws Again

Szymon Hołownia is abroad (probably in Dubai), which is why he had to farewell other National Council members and log out of the meeting on Friday. Earlier, he had declared his willingness to run in the repeated party leadership elections.

However, the scenario of Hołownia returning to the game now seems outdated. “I informed the members of the National Council in a friendly message today that the decisions of the Candidates fighting for the Chairmanship incline me to place full responsibility for further decisions concerning the party in their hands,” wrote the Marshal of the Sejm on Twitter.
