For a formation with polling scraping the bottom, it delivered news as if playing at least two leagues higher. Though not the interest its leaders had dreamed of. In public perception, problems in selecting a leader caused the party to become a meme, and nothing is worse in politics than being mocked.
Szymon Hołownia’s Complicated Exit
The former Sejm marshal first resigned from the chairmanship, but probably wasn’t happy about it, as he then tried to reverse his decision. His “last dance” instead of calming tensions caused additional ferment. Ultimately, he failed to convince leadership to “reset” the elections, but as a consolation, Katarzyna Pełczyńska-Nałęcz won, to whom he is closer than Paulina Hennig-Kloska.
Democratic Competition Exposes Organizational Flaws
Organizational-technical failures were merely a symptom, not the source. These elections were for real—candidates were not puppets putting on a show, but politicians genuinely seeking support within the party. Poland 2050 became partly a victim of its own democratization, a process many political formations have nothing in common with.
Growing Pains of Party Democracy
The problem in selecting a leader was the result of choosing Szymon Hołownia’s successor through genuine competition. Real competition activated dynamics that were difficult to control, with various party figures making nervous moves. Some errors could have been avoided, but certain “infantile diseases” must be endured—democracy in this party is after all a newborn.
Democratic Process Sets Precedent
The Polish commentary reserved only ridicule for Poland 2050, not recognizing how democratic elections within a party should look. The process of selecting a leader in the group founded by Hołownia deserves recognition. They set a high bar and did not lower it in their next attempt. Their failure would have been uneducational for all other formations.
