Poland’s Minister of Funds and Regional Policy suggests co-chairmanship model for party leadership.
Proposed Leadership Change
Minister of Funds and Regional Policy proposed on Monday a change in the Poland 2050 party’s leadership formula. In a letter to activists first published by Wirtualna Polska, she suggested that she and Paulina Hennig-Kloska co-chair the party. The decision on this matter would be made not by the National Council, but by the broader National Congress of Poland 2050.
Opposition to Proposal
The proposal by the head of the MFiPR faces opposition from party supporters of Hennig-Kloska, who assess it as a “cry of despair” and a “fight for survival” by Pełczyńska-Nałęcz. According to them, Poland 2050 will likely not agree to such a variant, which would also require changing the formation’s statute.
Hennig-Kloska’s Response
The minister herself claims that the proposal was not agreed upon with her. “I believe that the democratic process in the party, which we began on January 10, needs to be concluded,” Hennig-Kloska adds in an interview with Gazeta.pl.
Upcoming Party Meeting
On Monday evening, the National Council of Poland 2050 will again meet online. It will continue the sessions interrupted on Friday, during which a decision should be made about the next steps regarding the party chairman elections. It is unknown whether Szymon Hołownia will participate in the meeting, as he will be on a plane returning from a foreign trip.
Hołownia’s Resignation
According to our information, a more likely scenario is the repetition of the second round of elections, especially since Szymon Hołownia ultimately resigned on Monday from the fight to continue leading the party. “I have today conveyed to the members of the National Council in a heartfelt message that the decisions of the candidates vying for the position of Chairwoman lead me to hand over full responsibility for the next decisions concerning the party into their hands,” wrote the Deputy Marshal of the Sejm on Twitter.
