Poland and Ukraine Launch Joint Drone Armada Project

Polish and Ukrainian leaders announced a “major drone armada project” in Rzeszów, aiming to bolster both nations’ defense capabilities through collaboration.

Joint Polish-Ukrainian Drone Initiative Announced

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk and Ukrainian Prime Minister Julia Swyrydenko jointly announced a large-scale drone armada project during the Road to URC conference in Rzeszów.

Tusk emphasized the importance of integrating Ukraine’s battlefield experience into Poland’s defense strategy, specifically regarding the protection of Polish airspace.

Ukraine’s Defense Experience as a Key Asset

Tusk stressed that lasting peace and effective airspace protection are prerequisites for Ukraine’s reconstruction, highlighting Ukraine’s unique expertise in defending against aerial attacks.

He stated Poland must develop a modern drone fleet, not only to aid Ukraine but also to ensure the security of Poland itself.

Financial and Technological Collaboration

The Polish drone armada plan will be supported by Ukrainian technical expertise and battlefield experience, funded through a combination of European and Polish resources.

Ukraine’s Evolving Defense Sector

Ukrainian Prime Minister Swyrydenko highlighted the rapid development of Ukraine’s defense sector, transitioning from a recipient of aid to a provider of modern defense solutions.

She noted that Ukrainian systems are already changing the dynamics of the war with Russia, enabling the destruction of enemy tanks, systems, and drones.

Strategic Partnership and Reconstruction

Swyrydenko described Poland as a strategic partner and close neighbor, thanking Poland for its support, including accepting Ukrainian refugees and providing political and organizational assistance since the start of the Russian invasion.

She believes collaboration with Poland will create new business opportunities for companies on both sides of the border.

EU Integration of Ukraine’s Defense Capabilities

European Commissioner for Defence and Space, Andrius Kubilius, participating online, argued that integrating Ukraine’s defense potential with the European Union is crucial for deterring Russia.

Kubilius emphasized Ukraine’s unique, battle-tested technologies should be incorporated into a new common European defense union, alongside financial support and full integration into the European single market.

Preparations for Ukraine Recovery Conference

The Road to URC meeting in Rzeszów is a preparatory step for the Ukraine Recovery Conference in Gdańsk in June, which will focus on rebuilding Ukraine and its future security.

Tusk stated that reconstruction is contingent on ensuring the security of Ukraine, Poland, and Europe, emphasizing the need for a secure Ukraine and Europe to address the challenges of rebuilding after the war.
