Poland: Bear Attack Confirmed as Cause of Woman’s Death

A 58-year-old woman died in southeastern Poland after being attacked by a bear while searching for shed antlers with her son on Thursday morning.

Bear Attack in Bukowsko Municipality

A woman died following a bear attack in the Bukowsko municipality. The incident occurred last Thursday morning in a forest area within the municipality.

The 58-year-old woman was searching for shed antlers with her son when she was attacked. She called her son around 10:30 AM to report the attack.

Search and Discovery

The son began searching for his mother and found her after approximately fifteen minutes. She had sustained head injuries as a result of the attack.

Investigation and Cause

Emergency services were immediately notified, but the doctor on scene pronounced the woman dead due to the extent of her injuries. The Sanok District Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the case as unintentional manslaughter, standard procedure in such incidents.

Environmental Assessment

Employees of the Regional Directorate of Environmental Protection in Rzeszów also inspected the scene, located about 1.5 km into the forest. They believe strong winds may have prevented the bear from hearing or sensing the woman’s approach, leading to the aggressive encounter.

Autopsy Confirms Attack

The autopsy confirmed the injuries were characteristic of a wild animal attack, according to the prosecutor. The Prosecutor’s Office in Sanok is awaiting a written opinion on the matter.
