Poland’s Interior Ministry is convening emergency meetings as severe weather warnings are issued for multiple voivodeships, anticipating significant rainfall and potential flooding.
Severe Weather Prompts National Response
The Polish Ministry of Interior and Administration (MSWiA) is holding a meeting at the Government Security Centre with voivodes and representatives of emergency services. The MSWiA stated that services under the ministry are fully prepared to respond to potential heavy rainfall in the Dolnośląskie, Lubuskie, Wielkopolskie, and Zachodniopomorskie voivodeships.
The ministry emphasized that the weather situation is being continuously monitored, and the ministry’s leadership is receiving regular reports and making appropriate decisions.
Intense Rainfall Warnings Issued
The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) has issued second-degree warnings for intense rainfall. The rainfall may range from moderate to strong, with potential thunderstorms. The warning is in effect from 3:00 PM Sunday to 3:00 PM Monday, affecting the Dolnośląskie, Lubuskie, and parts of the Wielkopolskie voivodeships.
Rainfall totals could reach 40-50 mm, with localized amounts up to 60 mm.
Strong Winds and Storms Expected
A first-degree warning for rainfall has been issued for parts of the Zachodniopomorskie voivodeship and one powiat in the Wielkopolskie voivodeship. Forecasted rainfall in these areas could range from 30-40 mm, locally up to 50 mm.
The IMGW also warns of potentially strong wind gusts during thunderstorms, reaching speeds of 60-65 km/h.
Potential for Material Damage and Risk to Life
Both first and second-degree warnings indicate dangerous meteorological phenomena that could cause material damage and pose threats to health and life. The IMGW states that the heaviest rainfall is expected Sunday evening and overnight into Monday.
Frost Warnings Also in Effect
The MSWiA also issued a warning regarding frost. The IMGW has issued first-degree warnings for parts of the Małopolskie and Podkarpackie voivodeships, where temperatures could drop to around -2°C, and near the ground to -5°C. This alert is valid from Saturday at 11:00 PM to Sunday at 8:00 AM.
Temperature Forecast
Synopticians predict maximum temperatures of 12-15°C in the north and in the submontane regions, around 17°C across most of the country, and up to 19°C in places in the south and southwest. It will be cooler by the sea, with forecast temperatures of 8-9°C.
Krakow Public Space Improvements Planned
Concerns regarding a lack of green spaces, undeveloped boulevards, and excessive concrete are being raised in discussions about Krakow’s public spaces. City authorities have announced several projects to address these issues.
