Poland Braces for Strong Winds: Over 1,500 Fire Service Interventions

Strong winds swept across Poland starting Easter Sunday, prompting over 1,500 interventions by fire services and renewed weather warnings from IMGW.

Severe Weather Conditions Across Poland

Difficult weather conditions have been affecting various regions of Poland since Easter Sunday (April 5th). Storms and strong winds were particularly prevalent overnight in many parts of the country.

As of 11:00 AM today (April 6th, Monday), approximately 1100 weather-related incidents had been reported since midnight. The Warsaw area and Lublin region experienced the highest number of interventions, with over 427 and 341 incidents respectively.

Incidents Reported

Fortunately, no fatalities or serious injuries have been reported. However, authorities continue to urge caution in many districts.

In Grudziądz, a tree branch fell onto a passing car on the Turznice-Dębieniec route on Sunday evening, resulting in one injury and requiring hospitalization. In Przywory Duże, strong winds ripped the roof off a residential building.

Additionally, in Lublin, trees fell and damaged four cars parked in a lot. Firefighters in Gąski (Inowrocław district) reported a tree branch falling onto a telecommunications line and road. Similar localized events occurred throughout Poland.

IMGW Issues Further Warnings

The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) has issued further warnings for strong winds across twelve voivodeships, from northwest to southeast Poland. The Coastal region is under a heightened alert issued by RCB.

Wind gusts could reach up to 95 km/h. The northern part of the Pomeranian Voivodeship (Lębork, Puck, Słupsk, Wejherowo districts and Słupsk city) and the Sławno district in West Pomerania are under a second-degree warning, with gusts up to 85-95 km/h expected in the early afternoon.

RCB Alert and Remaining Warnings

The Government Security Centre (RCB) has also issued alerts for the affected districts, advising residents to exercise caution outdoors and avoid parking or standing under trees.

First-degree warnings remain in effect for the rest of West Pomerania and Pomerania, as well as the entire Kujavian-Pomeranian, Warmian-Masurian, Mazovian, Podlaskie, and Lublin Voivodeships, and parts of the Lubusz, Wielkopolska, Łódź, Świętokrzyskie, and Subcarpathian Voivodeships. These regions will experience average wind speeds of 35-45 km/h, with gusts up to 70-85 km/h.

The alerts are valid until Monday at 9:00 PM. First and second-degree warnings indicate conditions conducive to dangerous meteorological phenomena that could cause material damage and threaten health and life.
