Poland has activated its fighter aircraft in response to a massive Russian assault on Ukraine that began overnight, marking one of the most significant attacks since the war commenced.
Poland Deploys Fighters Amid Russian Assault
The Operational Command of the Armed Forces issued a statement on Sunday, 5 October 2025, announcing the engagement of Polish fighter aircraft to patrol the skies over Ukraine during the coordinated Russian attack.
The Command noted that the Russian Federation was launching further strikes on Ukrainian territory at 4–5 October 2025 and that all necessary procedures were activated to ensure the safety of Polish airspace.
Preventive Measures in Polish Airspace
Polish and allied aircraft are currently operating intensively over the region, while ground air‑defence and radar‑reconnaissance systems have reached a state of highest readiness.
These actions are described as preventive and aimed at securing the airspace and protecting citizens, especially in areas adjacent to threatened zones. The Command remains in full readiness to respond at any moment.
Massive Russian Attack on Ukraine
During the night of 4–5 October, Ukraine’s nationwide air‑defence alert was triggered as Russia targeted several locations, notably Zaporizhzhia, with Shahed drones and aerial bombs.
According to Iwan Fedorow, head of the region, 49 people were wounded and one person died. Power and water supplies were disrupted, and Lviv suffered explosions from drones and ballistic missiles, leaving large areas without electricity.
Deputy Defense Minister Declares Significant Assault
Cezary Tomczyk, Poland’s deputy defence minister, stated that the assault has been ongoing for several hours, involving heavy forces and the use of both drones and rockets against Lviv.
He added that this operation represents “one of the biggest attacks since the war began” and reaffirmed the continuous engagement of Polish and allied air forces.
