Poland Faces Over 6 Billion Zloty Fine Over Unfulfilled COVID Vaccine Contract

A Brussels court ruled Poland must honor a COVID-19 vaccine contract with Pfizer, a decision Prime Minister Donald Tusk blames on the previous government.

Morawiecki Government’s Unfulfilled Order

The government of Mateusz Morawiecki ordered COVID-19 vaccines that were never collected or paid for, resulting in a substantial financial penalty for Poland.

Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that all Polish citizens will collectively bear the cost of this “extreme foolishness” by the PiS party, amounting to over 6 billion Zloty in fines.

Brussels Court Ruling

On Wednesday, the First Instance Court in Brussels ruled that Poland must fulfill its agreement with the American pharmaceutical company Pfizer for the purchase of COVID-19 vaccines.

The ruling requires Poland to receive the remaining vaccine doses and pay the associated penalty; however, the decision is not yet final.

Tusk’s Reaction on X

Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented on the ruling via X (formerly Twitter), reiterating that the Morawiecki government’s failure to collect and pay for the vaccines will result in a penalty exceeding 6 billion Zloty for Poland.

Tusk emphasized that this situation is “unfortunately not an April Fool’s joke.”

Financial Implications

Poland is now obligated to cover the costs associated with the unfulfilled vaccine contract, a consequence directly attributed to the actions of the previous administration.
