The 1060th anniversary of the Baptism of Poland, commemorating the baptism of Mieszko I, will be celebrated on Lednica Island on Tuesday. Historians identify Lednica Island as a potential location for the baptism of Poland’s first historical ruler.

Establishment of the Holiday

The Feast of the Baptism of Poland was established by the Sejm (Polish Parliament) in 2019. This year marks the 1060th anniversary of the event, believed to have taken place on April 14, 966, during Easter.

Special Attractions for Visitors

Uroczyste obchody (ceremonial celebrations) will take place within the Early Piast Residence on Lednica Island, one of the most important sites connected with the beginnings of Poland.

Program of Events

According to the Museum of the First Piasts in Lednica, the program includes religious ceremonies, popular science meetings, and guided tours. A solemn mass will be held in the palace chapel, and the “Mieszko and Dobrawa” bell will be rung to commemorate the anniversary.

The schedule also includes a meeting and presentation of the graphic exhibition “Piast Landscapes,” as well as a lecture titled “Lednica Island – The Baptismal Font of Poland.” A guided tour of Lednica Island with an archaeologist will also take place on Tuesday.

Lednica Island was once the site of one of the most important strongholds of the Piast state. The site currently includes remnants of powerful defensive ramparts and a princely palace with a chapel. Tourists can reach the island by ferry.

The baptism of Prince Mieszko I is considered a pivotal event in the history of Poland, symbolizing the beginning of Polish statehood. It had fundamental political, identity, cultural significance, and integrated the emerging Polish state into the civilization of Western Europe.
