The Polish military is investing in laser technology and modernizing its air defense capabilities, including local production of CAMM-ER missiles.
Poland Seeks Laser Defense Systems
The Polish military is initiating market consultations to acquire laser weapon systems for short-range air defense. These systems are intended to serve as a final line of defense against aerial threats that penetrate existing defenses like Wisła, Narew, and Pilica.
Similar laser systems are currently being tested by the U.S. Army, with plans for potential procurement through the Enduring High Energy Laser (E-HEL) program starting in 2026, and by Israel with the Iron Beam system.
Local Missile Production to Bolster Air Defense
Poland is advancing its air and missile defense systems, with a focus on the Narew program. This program will utilize British iLauncher systems and CAMM missiles, with a significant portion of production taking place domestically.
An agreement with MBDA will facilitate technology transfer, enabling local production of CAMM-ER missiles. A service and production center for CAMM-ER missiles and components for air and missile defense systems is planned in Zielonka, near Warsaw, at a cost of 130 million złoty, with completion expected in 2028.
New Factories for Missile Components
A new factory will be constructed in Skarżysko-Kamienna to produce engines and warheads for CAMM-ER missiles, representing an investment of 320 million złoty, including land acquisition and construction of production and storage facilities.
Modernization Goals
Deputy Minister of National Defense, Cezary Tomczyk, stated that Poland aims to possess the most advanced anti-missile shield in Europe, capable of countering drones, cruise missiles, helicopters, and aircraft.
Anti-Drone Systems Also Under Consideration
Alongside laser weapons, the Polish military is also exploring anti-drone jamming systems to protect airports, critical infrastructure, and military bases. Market consultations are underway to identify suitable systems for countering drones of Class 1.
