Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk reaffirmed Poland will not participate in a Middle Eastern war, emphasizing the nation’s focus on securing its eastern border and NATO commitments.
Eastern Border Security Takes Priority
Prime Minister Donald Tusk reiterated on Friday that Poland will not engage in the conflict in the Middle East. He stressed Poland’s responsibility for protecting its eastern border, which simultaneously serves as a border for both the EU and NATO.
During a press conference following the EU summit in Brussels, Tusk stated he had received indications that the previous government or the President might consider Polish involvement in the Middle East conflict.
NATO Commitments and US Focus
Tusk emphasized that Poland is currently fulfilling other security tasks, primarily the protection of its eastern border, as well as that of Europe and NATO. He expressed confidence in the full understanding of Poland’s allies, with whom he discussed the matter during the European Council meetings.
The Prime Minister noted that the war in the Middle East has partially diverted US and other nations’ attention from the situation on Poland’s eastern border, underscoring the importance of maintaining global focus on Ukraine and its impact on Poland’s security.
Firm “No” to Iran Mission
Tusk appealed to those considering Poland’s participation in further conflicts to refrain from doing so, stating he would not agree to such involvement. He had previously stated Poland would not send troops to Iran, citing the conflict’s lack of direct impact on Poland’s security.
Tusk highlighted Poland’s existing commitments within NATO, including the ongoing development of its land, air, and naval forces, emphasizing the importance of utilizing naval resources for Baltic Sea security.
Foreign Ministry Stance and Hormuz Strait
Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski echoed Tusk’s sentiment, stating Poland is focused on addressing the ongoing war near its borders and countering aggressive actions from Russia.
Sikorski indicated Poland would consider discussing the protection of the Strait of Hormuz if NATO were to request it, out of respect for its American ally, but noted President Karol Nawrocki had ruled out Polish military participation in such an operation.
International Context: US Calls for Action
The US and Israel have been bombing Iran since February 28th, prompting retaliatory attacks from Iran against Israel and Gulf states. Iran’s blockade of the Strait of Hormuz has led to a sharp increase in oil prices.
US President Donald Trump has renewed calls for other nations to join efforts to reopen the blocked shipping lane.
