Poland activated its air force and temporarily suspended operations at two airports following renewed Russian missile attacks targeting Ukraine on Wednesday.
Military Response to Russian Strikes
The Polish military initiated procedures in response to Russian missile strikes on Ukrainian territory, characterizing the actions as preventative measures to secure Polish airspace, particularly in areas adjacent to threatened regions.
The Operational Command of the Armed Forces (DORSZ) stated it is continuously monitoring the situation, with forces and assets remaining on standby for immediate response.
Activation of Air Defenses
The response included scrambling a fighter jet pair and an early warning aircraft, as well as raising the alert level of ground-based air defense and radar reconnaissance systems.
Recent Alerts and Airspace Monitoring
This is the latest such alert in recent weeks; on April 3rd, the Operational Command reported similar air force operations linked to Russian raids on Ukraine. Following those actions, the military confirmed no violations of Polish airspace were detected.
Enhanced Readiness Near Ukrainian Border
DORSZ emphasized that these actions are preventative, aimed at protecting and safeguarding Polish airspace, especially near areas bordering Ukraine. Such announcements typically occur during periods of intense Russian attacks on targets in western Ukraine.
Polish military services then activate airspace protection to mitigate risks to border regions and ensure a swift response if needed; no airspace violations have been reported.
Temporary Airport Closures
In addition to the military response, Poland temporarily closed the airports in Lublin and Rzeszów to ensure freedom of operation for military aircraft, according to the Polish Air Navigation Services Agency (PAŻP).
Separate Political Development
Arkadiusz Gruszczyński reported on Wyborcza.pl regarding a separate political matter involving Mateusz Giertych and Donald Tusk.
