Poland Sees Growing Number of School Closures Due to Severe Weather

Numerous school districts across Poland announced the suspension of classes for Thursday, January 15, 2026, due to dangerous icy road conditions.

Growing List of Closures

On Thursday, January 15, 2026, numerous local governments and school directors in Poland announced the suspension of classes due to adverse weather conditions, including icy roads and sidewalks. This list is updated continuously as more facilities announce closures.

Specific Districts and Schools Affected

In the Nowa municipality (Świecki County), the mayor decided to suspend classes on Thursday, January 15, in municipal primary schools and the public kindergarten, citing slippery and icy roads and sidewalks as a potential hazard for children. Facilities will remain open to provide care for children whose parents cannot organize it at home. School transport will not be running that day.

According to information published on Wednesday afternoon, classes in the municipalities of Gniewkowo, Pakość, and Złotniki Kujawskie have also been canceled for January 15. Despite the suspension of lessons, care in the form of after-school activities will be provided for students whose parents bring them to school. In the Gmina Kcynia, school buses will not operate, and schools will publish detailed information.

In the Białe Błota municipality, classes in primary schools and preschool units have been suspended for two days, from January 15 to 16, with after-school care provided but no school transport. In the Nowa Wieś Wielka municipality, student transport has been suspended, effectively meaning no classes on January 15, while care is provided for children and youth who arrive independently. The local government does not rule out extending the decision if freezing precipitation continues.

In the Kikół municipality, only bus transport has been canceled, while classes are to proceed as scheduled. In Inowrocław, Akademia Szkolnictwa – Branżowa Szkoła I Stopnia has canceled classes for January 15, with the open office from 9:00 to 13:00.

The principal of the Zespół Szkół in Jabłonowo Pomorski also canceled classes for January 15 due to difficult weather conditions. In Inowrocław, Akademia Szkolnictwa published a similar announcement, keeping its office open from 9:00 to 13:00. The mayor of the Nowy Duninów municipality also announced the cancellation of school classes for January 15, citing very difficult weather conditions and coordination with the school director.

Legal Basis for Closures

Decisions to suspend classes are based on regulations concerning health and safety in schools. A regulation allows a principal, with the consent of the managing body, to suspend classes for a specified period when the external temperature measured at 9:00 PM on two consecutive preceding days is -15°C or lower, or when other events threatening students’ health occur.

The same regulation requires a minimum temperature of 18°C in classrooms where activities are held. If the suspension is to last longer than two days, the Act on the Education System requires the principal to organize classes using distance learning methods from the third day onward.

A Dynamic Situation

Experience from previous winter weather episodes shows that lists of facilities with suspended classes can change quickly. Decisions can affect entire municipalities, specific schools, or selected types of activities, while keeping the facility open for care. Local governments and schools primarily provide details through current facility communications, electronic school journals, and municipal information channels.
