Poland Sees Rise in School Closures Due to Icy Conditions

Poland’s schools increasingly announce closures for Thursday, January 15, 2026, due to hazardous icy roads and sidewalks.

Hazardous Conditions Trigger Closures

In Gmina Nowe (Świecki County), classes are suspended on January 15 in municipal primary schools and kindergarten due to slippery, icy roads and sidewalks posing risks to children. Schools remain open for care if parents cannot arrange it at home, but school transport is canceled.

Gniewkowo, Pakość, and Złotniki Kujawskie also canceled classes for January 15, citing difficult road conditions. Supervisory care will be provided for students brought to school. Kruszwica had not announced closures by the time of reporting.

Regional Impact Details

In Gmina Kcynia, school buses will not run, with schools providing specific operational details. Gmina Białe Błota suspended classes in primary and preschool units for two days (January 15-16), halting transport but offering care at after-school clubs. Gmina Nowa Wieś Wielka suspended student transport, effectively halting classes for January 15 while ensuring care for students arriving independently, extending the decision if freezing conditions persist.

Gmina Kikół canceled school bus transport but classes proceed as scheduled. In Inowrocław, Akademia Szkolnictwa – Branżowa Szkoła I Stopnia canceled classes for January 15, keeping its open 9:00-13:00.

Further Closures Announced

The director of Zespół Szkół in Jabłonowo Pomorski canceled classes for January 15 due to difficult weather. Inowrocław’s Akademia Szkolnictwa also canceled classes, maintaining a 9:00-13:00 open secretariat. Gmina Nowy Duninów’s mayor canceled classes, coordinating with the school director due to severe conditions, with details to follow via the Librus electronic journal. Wójt of Gmina Zawidz, Kamil Różański, canceled all schools for January 15 “for student safety.”

Legal Framework for Closures

Closures may be based on safety regulations. A director, with the managing body’s approval, can suspend classes for a set period if external temperature at 21:00 for two consecutive preceding days is -15°C or lower, or other health-threatening events occur. Indoor temperatures during classes must be at least 18°C. Closures longer than two days require distance learning from the third day, considering student needs and local conditions.

Dynamic Situation

Experience shows closure lists can change quickly, affecting specific municipalities, schools, or activities while schools remain open for care. Updates are primarily communicated via school announcements, electronic journals (like Librus), and municipal information channels.
