Poland to Ban Social Media for Under-15s; Education Ministry Reveals Framework Amid ‘Dramatic’ Child Risk Concerns

Poland’s Education Minister unveils plans to restrict under-15s’ social media access citing risks of depression, violence and cyber threats.

Key Project Provisions

Education Minister Barbara Nowacka emphasized the dangers of children using social media, including alienation, depression, aggression, violence, and cyberterrorism risks, describing the situation as “dramatic.” She announced plans to restrict access for those under 15, with social consultations planned before implementation potentially starting early next year.

MP Monika Rosa clarified the legislation focuses on adult and platform responsibility, stating the large platforms “earn enormous money on the misfortune of our children” and must face consequences for their actions. Compliance monitoring will fall under the Digital Services Act (DSA), with age verification using the European Digital Identity Portal.

End of Phones in Schools

The ministry plans to limit smartphone use in primary schools, with steps also being taken in preschools. Deputy Education Minister Katarzyna Lubnauer stated screen time is being restricted in preschools, noting social media and screens harm more than they benefit young children, causing addiction.
