Poland to Make Health Education Mandatory, Excluding Sex Education

Polish Education Minister Barbara Nowacka will announce a decision regarding mandatory health education, reportedly set to begin in September, omitting sexual health components.

Government Concerns Over Ideological Conflict

Government spokesperson Adam Szłapka announced on Wednesday, April 8th, following a Council of Ministers meeting, that Minister Barbara Nowacka would reveal the decision regarding health education.

RMF FM reports that health education will be compulsory for all students starting in September. The program will not include content related to sexual health.

Avoiding “Ideological Warfare”

Sources indicate the coalition government aims to avoid an “ideological war” and fears protests from right-wing groups, believing schools should not be a “battleground” for such conflicts.

Replacement of Life Skills Education

Health education will replace life skills education from September 1, 2025. This year, the subject is not mandatory, despite initial announcements from the Ministry of Education.

Opposition from Conservative Groups

Certain right-wing and church groups, along with some conservative lawmakers within the ruling coalition – particularly from the PSL party – have criticized the introduction of health education due to its potential coverage of puberty and sexual health.

Delayed Decision

Minister Nowacka had planned to announce the decision by the end of March, but the announcement was delayed.

Ministry to Announce Decision This Week

Ewelina Gorczyca, spokesperson for the Ministry of National Education, stated that decisions regarding the potential mandatory status of health education will be announced this week.
