The Polish government is set to launch a deposit system for plastic and glass bottles, as well as cans, on October 1, aiming to significantly increase recycling rates.
System Details and Goals
The deposit system, initially planned for January 1, was postponed to October 1. The system aims to increase the recycling rate of bottles from less than 50% to up to 90%. Consumers will pay a deposit of 50 groszy or 1 złoty when purchasing products in certain packaging, which can be refunded when returning the packaging to designated points.
Implementation and Challenges
The system will not be fully operational from the start, with the “teething process” expected to take months. The Ministry of Climate and Environment plans to run information campaigns to raise awareness about the system, which will be implemented in stages, with some retailers and producers already prepared.
Returning Packaging and Refunds
Consumers will be able to return packaging to certain shops and machines, with the deposit refunded in cash, via card, or as a voucher. The system will be implemented in all communes, with larger shops required to accept packaging returns. Some retailers will use machines to streamline the process.
Exemptions and Limitations
Not all packaging will be included in the system, such as single-use bottles for alcohol or milk. The Ministry emphasizes that consumers should not crush or remove the barcode from packaging. Vouchers issued as refunds have a limited validity period, expected to be at least one month.
