Poland’s Education Ministry Proposes Specific Reason Requirements for School Absences

Poland’s MEN has proposed new regulations requiring specific reasons for school absences in an education law amendment.

New Legislative Proposal

Changes regarding school attendance have been included in a bill amending the education law and some other laws. Ewelina Gorczyca, spokesperson for MEN, confirmed that it was adopted by the Standing Committee of the Council of Ministers on January 22, 2026.

Reason Requirement Details

The project indicates that justification for absence will need to include a reason (without excessive or sensitive information, in accordance with consultations with UODO).

End of Blanket Justifications

Thanks to this change, it will no longer be possible to justify all absences, for example from an entire semester, without indicating a specific reason assigned to each absence, explains Ewelina Gorczyca.
