Poland’s IMGW Issues Flood Warnings as Thaw Causes Flooding

Poland’s IMGW issues second-level hydrological warnings as rising waters from thawing snow and rain flood homes in Lower Silesia and Opole.

Hydrological Warnings Issued

The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management has issued a new second-level hydrological warning for parts of Lower Silesia and Opole provinces. The alert refers to water level rises exceeding warning states on rivers and streams in the Sudety region and in the Oder river basin.

Rivers and Affected Areas

The warning includes, among others, the Nysa Kłodzka together with Ścinawka, sections of the Kozielno and Nysa reservoirs, as well as the upper Nysa Łużycka to Zgorzelec. Threatened are also tributaries: Orlica, Bóbr to the Pilchowice reservoir, upper Kwisa to the Leśna reservoir, Izera, Klikawa, Żydawka, Czermnica, Zdoniowski Potok and Ostrożnica.

The cause of water level increases is warming, melting of the snow cover and rainfall. In the Nysa Kłodzka and upper Nysa Łużycka catchments, local reaching of alarm states is not ruled out. Services appeal for caution in threatened areas.

Flooding Already Reported

In some parts of Poland, flooding has already occurred. This happened in the municipality of Czarne in the Pomeranian province, where buildings on one of the streets were flooded.

We are trying to unblock it, redirect water. All services have been activated, we have been working since 6:00 AM, said TVN24 mayor of the municipality Piotr Zabrocki. We have frozen soil. Water flows into it from a large area, water levels are rising threatening the safety of our homes, emphasized one of the residents in conversation with the station.
