Poland’s Left Party Proposes Healthcare Financing Overhaul

Hospital directors protest funding delays as Left unveils tax-based health reform plan.

Protest for Funding Stability

Directors of county hospitals and local government officials are protesting today before the Ministry of Health. They demand payment for medical services provided and seek stable financing for the healthcare system.

Left’s Tax-Based Reform Proposal

The Left proposes replacing the current 9% health contribution with a 12% health tax on income. This would introduce a tax-free threshold of 30,000 zł. According to the Left, this change would generate an additional 30 billion zł annually for the National Health Fund (NFZ), with wealthier individuals and corporations contributing more.

Funding would also come from a “fat tax” and excise duties on alcohol and cigarettes. The reform aims to allocate funding equivalent to 9% of GDP to healthcare.

Experts Call for Systemic Change

Experts emphasize that without systemic reforms, meaningful changes in healthcare financing will not occur. They underscore the need for fundamental restructuring of the current system.
