Poland’s Ministry of Education Abandons Shooting Training in Primary Schools

Poland’s Ministry of National Education has reversed a 2022 decision to include shooting training in the primary school curriculum.

Background to Curriculum Changes

The introduction of shooting training in schools was a response to the deteriorating geopolitical situation. In August 2022, Minister Przemysław Czarnek signed a regulation that changed the core curriculum of the “Education for Security” (EdB) subject.

The revised curriculum removed the health module and instead introduced topics related to military defense: terrain orientation, cybersecurity in military dimensions, and preparation for shooting training.

Content of Shooting Preparation Training

In primary schools, the theoretical component covered principles of safe and effective firearm use, knowledge of firearm structure, and basic shooting skills.

Specific skills included proper shooting positions, aligning sighting devices, controlling breathing when preparing to shoot, and correct trigger pull techniques.
