Poland’s section control speed cameras, part of the CANARD network, are expanding and significantly increasing traffic enforcement nationwide.
How Does Section Speed Control Work?
The system operates by recording the time and license plate of vehicles at the beginning and end of a monitored section of road. It then calculates the average speed over that distance.
Unlike traditional speed cameras, this method eliminates the possibility of avoiding a ticket by briefly slowing down before the device. Maintaining a consistent speed is crucial.
Where Are the Systems Located?
Section speed control systems are currently deployed on key routes across Poland, including highways, expressways, and national roads.
Examples include the A1 highway between Tuszyn and Piotrków Trybunalski, the A4 highway in Lower Silesia and Małopolska, and sections of the S7, S8, and S3 expressways. National roads like DK12, DK14, DK72, and DK92 also feature these systems.
Legal Basis and Driver Responsibility
The operation of section speed control in Poland is based on the Road Traffic Act and regulations concerning the transport of goods. These laws define the responsibilities of control authorities, including the Main Inspectorate of Road Transport.
Regulations regarding automated traffic monitoring allow for data processing from cameras and the issuance of fines without on-site officer involvement, placing full responsibility on the driver.
Fines, Penalty Points, and Consequences
Exceeding the average speed limit on a monitored section results in a fine according to the current tariff. A tolerance margin of approximately 10 km/h is typically applied, but is not guaranteed by law.
Fines can range from several dozen to 2500 złoty, increasing to 5000 złoty for repeat offenders, along with up to 15 penalty points. Accumulating enough points can lead to license suspension.
How to Avoid a Ticket
The most effective way to avoid a fine is to maintain a constant, legal speed throughout the entire monitored section. Using cruise control is highly recommended.
Navigation apps that display average speed and warn of section control systems can also be helpful. Maintaining a safety margin is also advised, as speedometers and GPS readings may vary slightly.
