A survey reveals 56% of Poles fear making errors in their tax returns due to complex regulations.
Risk of Errors Drives Anxiety
Despite recent simplifications, 56% of taxpayers fear making mistakes when filing their tax returns. This indicates the process is still perceived as complicated and requires significant attention.
Uncertainty stems mainly from difficulties interpreting tax laws and worries about omitting key declaration elements. Taxpayers fear both formal errors and incorrect application of deductions, potentially requiring corrections or contact with tax authorities.
Clarity on Rules Diminishing
A significant source of uncertainty is the lack of clarity regarding current regulations. 38% of respondents are unsure if tax filing rules changed year-on-year—a 6 percentage point increase from last year, suggesting growing confusion.
Frequent legislative changes make it hard for taxpayers to determine which rules apply in a given tax year, increasing error risk and prompting greater caution during filing.
Lack of Knowledge on Deductions
One major challenge is limited awareness of tax deductions. 33% admit they lack knowledge about available deductions that could reduce their tax liability. However, 88% express a desire for more information on this topic—a 5 percentage point rise from the previous year.
This means taxpayers recognize potential benefits from deductions but lack the information to utilize them effectively, potentially leading to overpayment.
Prefer Manual Verification
Many taxpayers do not rely solely on official filing tools. 51% prefer to personally verify their eligible deductions rather than fully trust automated systems.
41% seek external help, such as tax advisors or specialized tax return programs, viewing these as more transparent or offering greater control over the filing process.
Early Filing Common Despite Concerns
Despite anxiety about complexity and errors, nearly half of respondents plan to file their tax returns in February, aiming to finalize obligations quickly or secure tax refunds early, avoiding last-minute pressure.
Need for Greater Transparency
The survey, conducted via CAWI on a representative sample of 1,000 Polish adults using SW Panel, highlights that despite digital tools and e-tax administration, taxpayers need clearer regulations and better information on their rights and options.
