Central Bureau of Anti-Cybercrime Police have arrested individuals suspected of counterfeiting currency, including a former Ukrainian intelligence officer, in multiple Polish cities.
Counterfeit Currency Operation Uncovered
At the end of last year, the Central Bureau of Anti-Cybercrime Police secured 76 counterfeit 500 złoty banknotes. Collaboration was established with the Criminal Department of the Radom City Police Headquarters, the Criminal Department of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Radom, and the Department for Combating Economic Crime of the Capital Police Headquarters.
The counterfeit banknotes were put into circulation within these jurisdictions.
Former Ukrainian Official Among Those Arrested
A man suspected of being a counterfeiter was detained in Sochaczew, along with his wife. Both are citizens of Ukraine. A complete production line and prints of banknotes with denominations of 100 and 200 złoty were seized from their apartment.
Police found images of banknotes on the computer that matched those put into circulation.
Suspect Possessed Specialized IT and Electronics Knowledge
Police stated that the man suspected of counterfeiting is a former Ukrainian intelligence officer who is self-taught and possesses specialized knowledge in IT and electronics.
Raids Conducted in Wrocław, Katowice, and Poznań
In Wrocław, a Russian citizen was detained, who authorities believe was an accomplice to the counterfeiter and had previously been involved in drug production. Police seized precursors used in the production of methamphetamine.
In Katowice and Poznań, individuals were arrested who, according to police, provided bank accounts to other members of the criminal group.
Further Arrests Planned
Four suspects have been temporarily arrested. Police emphasized that the case is ongoing and plan further arrests. The investigation is supervised by the 1st Investigative Division of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Wrocław.
Penalties for Counterfeiting
Counterfeiting is a crime punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment.
