Police searched the perimeter of Law and Justice leader Jarosław Kaczyński’s home on Sunday evening following an electronically submitted report alleging that explosive devices had been planted in the garden.
PiS Spokesman Alleges Political Provocation
PiS spokesperson Rafał Bochenek stated that while the conduct of the officers was not controversial in this instance, the incident is part of a growing series of provocations directed at the opposition. He argued that the current government is actively utilizing state services against opposition groups and media outlets.
Interior Ministry Rebuts Claims of Political Targeting
Karolina Gałecka, spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior and Administration, dismissed the accusations, noting that Poland is facing a wave of cascading false bomb alarms sent to various addresses. She emphasized that police are working to apprehend the perpetrators and noted that similar false alarms occurred during the 2019 high school exit exams under the previous PiS administration.
Gałecka urged political figures to refrain from inciting national hysteria and to allow law enforcement to perform their duties without political interference.
Escalation of Threats Against Media Figures
Bochenek’s comments referenced a recent police intervention at the home of Tomasz Sakiewicz, editor-in-chief of Telewizja Republika. The station reported that its staff members are frequently targeted by false calls involving fabricated reports of suicide attempts or explosive devices at their residences.
In the Sakiewicz case, police initially detained a 53-year-old man, but he was later released with the status of a victim after it was discovered that his email and personal data had been hijacked to send the fraudulent alerts.
Ongoing Investigation and Shift in Oversight
On Monday, Deputy Minister of the Interior Czesław Mroczek confirmed on TOK FM that while the perpetrators have not yet been identified, police investigations remain active. The case is currently being supervised by the District Prosecutor’s Office in Warsaw-Mokotów.
The Metropolitan Police announced that, due to the volume and scope of these incidents, the investigation has been transferred to the Investigative Division of the Metropolitan Police Headquarters.
