A 23-year-old police officer was killed and 25 people injured when two explosive devices detonated during a police response to a burglary in Lviv, Ukraine.
Explosions During Police Response
On Saturday before midnight, services received a report of a break-in at one of the shops. After police patrol arrived at the scene, an explosion occurred. When the second patrol arrived, another explosion followed. Buildings near the explosion site, as well as a police car and a private vehicle, were damaged. Police have confirmed that improvised explosive devices were detonated.
Investigation Underway
The Lviv District Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the explosions under the act of terrorism. Authorities reported that 25 people were injured. Mayor Andrij Sadowy stated that the condition of many of the injured is serious. The police officer who died was 23-year-old Wiktoria Szpyłka. “Her colleagues remember her as a sensitive, sharp and honest person. She was able to support, listen and say a good word even in the most difficult days,” police emphasized in a statement.
Suspect Apprehended
A suspect has been arrested for carrying out the terrorist attack in Lviv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy wrote on the X platform that Minister of Internal Affairs Ihor Klymenko informed him of this information. “I express my condolences to the family and loved ones. All necessary measures have been provided to conduct the investigation. Actions with the detained person are ongoing. Thank you to everyone who is helping!” – wrote Wołodymyr Zełenski.
