The Warsaw Metropolitan Police have denied TV Republika’s claims regarding an intervention at the home of editor-in-chief Tomasz Sakiewicz, citing a high-priority response to a reported threat to human life.
Police Dispute TV Republika Account
The Warsaw II District Police Command has refuted accounts provided by TV Republika regarding an intervention at a residence on Wiktorska Street. Police spokesperson Jacek Wiśniewski emphasized that officers are mandated to respond immediately to reports involving potential threats to health or life.
Tomasz Sakiewicz, the station’s editor-in-chief, claimed on air that police forced entry into his home and handcuffed his assistant under the pretext of an endangered child being present.
Intervention Details and Use of Force
Police reported that officers arrived after receiving a notification that an individual at the address was behaving in a way that threatened their own life. Upon entry, officers encountered a woman who refused to identify herself or cooperate. To ensure safety, she was placed in handcuffs until the situation could be clarified.
Officials stated that Sakiewicz also acted in a confrontational manner, ignoring inquiries regarding the nature of the intervention. The police explicitly denied that anyone was arrested during the incident.
Operational Protocol and False Reports
The police confirmed that the initial report of a life-threatening situation was false and likely intended to mislead emergency services. Officials stressed that they must treat all reports with the same procedural rigor, regardless of the property owner’s identity, to prevent potential tragedies.
Spokesperson Wiśniewski noted that such false reports are frequently used to trigger public panic and disrupt emergency services. Authorities have launched a procedure to track down the individual responsible for the malicious call, as such actions constitute a criminal offense.
Evidence and Political Commentary
To verify their account, the police released a short video excerpt from body cameras, noting that full recordings are currently being analyzed by a control unit. They maintained that officers were guided by the duty to protect human life above all else.
Rafał Leśkiewicz, a spokesperson for Karol Nawrocki, criticized the incident on social media, describing it as a threat to media freedom and a signal of the erosion of democratic norms.
