Police shot and killed a 39-year-old man in Bytom on March 2 after he charged at officers with two sabers during a hostage situation.
The Incident
The incident occurred on Monday (March 2). Police from Bytom received a call from a concerned family member who feared for their relative’s life. They hadn’t been in contact since December.
Upon arriving at the specified address, no one opened the door, so firefighters present conducted a forced entry. After entering the apartment, an aggressive and agitated 39-year-old man rushed at the officers. Dressed in a winter jacket and holding a saber in his hands, he threatened to use it, then barricaded himself in the apartment.
Police Intervention
Police arrived on the scene and conducted negotiations with the man for over two hours. Later, counter-terrorists forcefully entered the apartment.
During the intervention, the aggressor charged at police officers with two sabers. As he was highly agitated and did not respond to commands to discard the dangerous tools, in a situation of direct threat to life and health, police were forced to use their service weapons.
Aftermath
The injured 39-year-old was handed over to a medical rescue team. He was taken to a hospital, where despite receiving help, he died after a few hours.
Proceedings in this case are being supervised by the prosecutor.
