Polish Activists Released from Israeli Custody to Face Deportation to Turkey

Polish activists detained by Israeli forces while attempting to break the naval blockade of the Gaza Strip have been released from prison and are being deported to Turkey.

Detention of Global Sumud Flotilla Activists

On May 18, Israeli authorities intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla, detaining several activists including Polish nationals Łukasz Kozak, Agata Wisłocka, and British medical student Kareem Awad. The group had been attempting to deliver aid to the occupied Gaza Strip.

Concerns regarding the treatment of the detainees escalated after Israel’s Minister of National Security, Itamar Ben-Gvir, published a video showing the group handcuffed and kneeling while being humiliated by soldiers. Supporters described the incident as a systemic manifestation of occupation and apartheid.

Diplomatic Response and Deportation

In response to the video, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski condemned the treatment of the activists and summoned the Israeli chargé d’affaires in Warsaw. The Polish government demanded an official apology and immediate compliance with international standards regarding the treatment of the detainees.

Polish authorities confirmed that the activists have been released from prison and are currently en route to the airport for deportation to Turkey. Additionally, Foreign Minister Sikorski has requested that the Ministry of the Interior and Administration impose an entry ban on Minister Ben-Gvir due to his actions.

Criticism of Governmental Delay

While advocates welcomed the intervention of the Polish Foreign Ministry, they questioned why the response was not more immediate following the capture of citizens in international waters. Experts argue that sustained diplomatic pressure on Israel is required to address the ongoing blockade and the occupation of Palestinian territories.
