Polish Authorities Seize One Ton of Heroin in Gdynia Port

Polish law enforcement agencies have thwarted the smuggling of nearly one ton of heroin at the Port of Gdynia in an operation described as the largest of its kind in a decade.

A Decade-High Seizure

Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński announced that the operation, conducted several weeks ago by the Central Bureau of Police Investigation and the National Revenue Administration, was kept confidential until now due to ongoing procedural activities.

Finance Minister Andrzej Domański stated that this is one of the largest anti-narcotic operations in the history of both Poland and the European Union, with a estimated street value of 220 million PLN.

Origin and Scale of Operations

Police Commander-in-Chief Marek Boroń confirmed that the illicit shipment originated from Iran. Officials emphasized that such a massive quantity of heroin had never before been intercepted within the country.

Kierwiński highlighted the success as a reflection of effective inter-agency cooperation, noting that preventing the drug from reaching the market averted a significant public health threat.

Aggressive Anti-Drug Campaign

Data provided by the Ministry shows that Polish services have seized over 83 tons of narcotics in the first five months of the year, compared to 56 tons in 2025 and 19 tons in 2022. Additionally, authorities have dismantled 49 laboratories and 4 cannabis plantations this year.

Nearly 1,200 individuals have been detained, with 83 facing charges related to leading organized criminal groups. The Minister reiterated that there will be no leniency for those engaged in the drug trade.
