Polish Captain of MV Hondius to Be Evacuated to Poland for Quarantine

Following the disinfection of the cruise ship MV Hondius in Rotterdam, Captain Jan Dobrogowski is set to be transported to Poland by ambulance this Friday to undergo testing and mandatory quarantine.

Vessel Disinfection and Crew Status

After the evacuation of tourists in the Canary Islands, 25 crew members and two medical personnel remained aboard the MV Hondius. On Monday, May 18, the vessel docked in Rotterdam to undergo a thorough disinfection process.

Most of the crew members disembarked and entered a 42-day quarantine. Kiki Hirschfeldt, spokesperson for the operator Oceanwide Expeditions, confirmed that Captain Jan Dobrogowski is in good condition given the circumstances.

International Crew Arrangements

Dutch crew members began their quarantine at home upon arrival in Rotterdam. Meanwhile, 17 Filipino crew members remained at the port, housed in a specialized, isolated container village established by the Dutch Ministry of Health due to a lack of medical facilities in their home country. None of these individuals are currently exhibiting symptoms of illness.

Background and Career of the Captain

Captain Jan Dobrogowski is a graduate of the Gdynia Maritime University with over two decades of professional experience. He began his career in 1999 on the sailing ship Zawisza Czarny, where he served as first officer during two trips around Cape Horn, eventually becoming captain of the vessel at age 26.
