Polish ocean‑sailor Krzysztof Baranowski has just reached his first stop, the island of Martinique, on a global circumnavigation that began mid‑November and is expected to last another year.
Arrival in Martinique
Captain Krzysztof Baranowski arrived at the island of Martinique, his first port of call on a worldwide trip that began in mid‑November aboard the yacht Meteor.
He was welcomed by fellow sailor Marta Kania, who greeted him and announced that the island’s port will soon hand over its moorings to him. Kania noted that while a full‑night shift began at 2:17 a.m. for Baranowski, the crew started a concert at 21:00, and that the captain will soon emerge from the darkness of the marina.
Route of the Circumnavigation
Baranowski’s yacht left Tenerife and visited Martinique, Panama, Tahiti, Fiji, Darwin, Mauritius, and Cape Town before returning to Tenerife. He is 87, undertaking his third solo circumnavigation of the globe, and plans to finish the voyage in about a year.
During the journey he keeps his followers updated on social media, including a 3 December post about repairing a starboard mast that had been hanging on the stern. He described the work as taking a few hours under 30‑knuckle winds, but that he continues to sail.
Biography of Krzysztof Baranowski
Born in 1938, Baranowski is an iconic figure in Polish oceanic sailing. He became the first Pole to sail the Horn of Africa in 1973 and has circumnavigated the globe twice, in 1972 and 1999. He is also the ninth sailor worldwide to have completed a solo circumnavigation on a route notorious for strong winds and frequent storms.
