Polish Citizen Detained in Libya During Humanitarian Mission

Benghazi authorities confirmed the detention of members from the Sumud Global Land Convoy, including a Polish delegate, for entering Libyan territory without the required legal permits and official border authorization.

Official Statement from Benghazi

Authorities in Benghazi stated that diplomatic services are monitoring events involving members of the Sumud Global Land Convoy who entered Libya without adhering to legal procedures or obtaining the necessary permits for crossing official border checkpoints.

The authorities emphasized that the matter is being handled within the framework of legal and humanitarian responsibility, consistent with national sovereignty and Libyan regulations, while ensuring the protection of human rights standards.

The Ministry confirmed that all detained individuals are receiving necessary healthcare and humanitarian support while legal and administrative procedures regarding their status are ongoing.

Details of the Convoy Incident

Rafał Piotrowski, spokesperson for the Polish section of the Sumud Global Flotilla, reported that a Polish delegate was detained on Sunday by forces loyal to General Khalifa Haftar. The group, aiming to protest the blockade of the Gaza Strip, had joined the convoy in Libya on May 7.

According to the spokesperson, contact with the group of over 200 international participants was lost on Sunday at approximately 4:00 PM, roughly 6 kilometers from the eastern border. The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs is currently verifying reports of the detention and remains in contact with Libyan authorities.

Context of the Libyan Security Crisis

Since the 2011 collapse of the Muammar Gaddafi regime, Libya has remained divided between a UN-recognized government in the west and eastern territories controlled by General Khalifa Haftar and the Libyan National Army.

The Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs maintains a travel advisory for Libya, warning citizens that the security situation is highly unpredictable and volatile, and strongly advises all Polish nationals currently in the country to depart immediately.
