Polish national freed from Venezuelan prison returns home on January 19 as part of group of 140 political prisoners released after Maduro’s capture by Americans.
Polish Prisoner’s Release
A Polish citizen held in Venezuela is returning to the country on January 19, following cooperation between Polish and Czech authorities. The former prisoner is reportedly in good health and prioritizes reuniting with his family.
International Coordination
The Czech Republic organized transportation for the prisoner release, including their own citizen Jan Darmovzal who had been detained for nearly 18 months. Czech Foreign Minister Petr Macinka confirmed they also transported one citizen each from Ireland, Poland, and Romania.
Journalists Among Released Prisoners
Venezuela released several journalists last week, including Spaniards, Italians, and an American. The National College of Journalists confirmed 11 of 24 media workers detained since summer 2024 were freed.
Political Prisoner Situation
Maduro’s successor Delcy Rodriguez announced the release of 400 people, while human rights defenders provided 100 names. According to human rights organizations, Venezuela currently holds 806 political prisoners, though Caracas claims these are individuals with criminal charges under verification.
