Polish Court Orders Imprisonment for Comments on Giertych; No Apology Offered

A Warsaw court on Tuesday ordered Adam Borowski to serve a six-month sentence for statements made about Roman Giertych, rejecting appeals for suspension.

Borowski Sentenced to Prison

On Tuesday, March 24th, Judge Katarzyna Bień of the Warsaw-Wola District Court ruled that Adam Borowski must serve a previously issued sentence.

The court determined Borowski could serve six months in prison, despite a prosecutor’s request to suspend the sentence, which was rejected along with arguments from the defense.

Borowski Refuses to Apologize

After leaving the courtroom, Borowski stated the court considered the issue of an apology and found he had the opportunity to offer one, but did not. He noted the court did not change its position despite the prosecutor’s request.

Borowski added he has one week to file an appeal.

Background of the Case

The verdict followed a January ruling where Borowski was sentenced to six months imprisonment for comments regarding Roman Giertych. The case is a private prosecution.

According to the description of the case, Giertych, a politician, accused Borowski of defamation and undermining his professional reputation in comments related to the Polnord affair.

Reactions to the Verdict

Giertych commented on the case on X, stating Borowski had promised to apologize but was now mocking the justice system, believing he would be pardoned by Nawrocki.

He further stated that those who refuse to comply with court rulings related to actions during the previous opposition period, believing their affiliation with the Gazeta Polska Clubs grants them immunity, should face imprisonment.

Giertych concluded, “His personal decision. I take accountability seriously.”

Political Responses

Przemysław Czarnek also commented, stating, “Adam, we are with you and will not leave you! Regardless of views – this is an issue that should concern everyone who believes in freedom of speech.”

Sebastian Kaleta of PiS stated, “Poland is becoming a failed state, a crypto-dictatorship, and that crypto is diminishing.”
