Polish Culture Minister Defends Vulgar Language in Private Messages

Poland’s Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Marta Cienkowska, explained her use of profanity in private communications, attributing it to her late father’s influence.

Minister Cienkowska Addresses Leaked Messages

Minister Marta Cienkowska responded to the publication of vulgar messages exchanged within a group of leading politicians discussing potential re-runs of elections. The messages included strong language directed at candidates and media outlets.

Journalist Konrad Piasecki noted the “rich vocabulary” displayed in the messages during a TVN24 broadcast. Cienkowska acknowledged she wasn’t surprised by the leak but admitted to regularly using such language in private conversations.

“I Get It From My Father”

Cienkowska stated she does not and will not use vulgar language publicly, emphasizing a sense of responsibility for her public statements. However, she defended her private use of such language, saying, “I get it from my father, may he rest in peace. And that’s it. My father spoke very strongly.”

Language in the Arts

The Minister argued that the use of strong language is common in various artistic fields, including theater, film, music, and particularly rap. She asserted that such language is not new or controversial within the cultural sector.

Government Reshuffle Speculation

Cienkowska also addressed media reports regarding a potential government reshuffle, specifically mentioning the possibility of changes to the Ministers of Education (Barbara Nowacka), Culture (Marta Cienkowska), and Health (Jolanta Sobierańska-Grenda). She stated that the Prime Minister has never expressed dissatisfaction with her work and has, at times, praised it.

Prime Minister Tusk Denies Reshuffle Plans

On March 20th, Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented on the rumors, stating he was unaware of the source of the speculation. He acknowledged that some media outlets had reported on his plans for another government reshuffle but confirmed he currently has no such plans.
