Polish fighter jets intercepted a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft flying over the Baltic Sea without a flight plan and with its transponder off.
Polish Air Force Interception
The Polish Air Force intercepted a Russian Il-20 aircraft conducting reconnaissance in international airspace, according to a statement from the Operational Command of the Polish Armed Forces (DORSZ) posted on X. The aircraft was operating without a filed flight plan and with its transponder disabled.
DORSZ emphasized that the interception did not involve a violation of Polish airspace.
Interceptions as a Security Measure
DORSZ stated that such interceptions are not demonstrations of force, but rather a fundamental tool for ensuring control over national airspace. Their purpose is to quickly identify aircraft that do not respond to air traffic control, operate without a flight plan, or violate airspace regulations.
Procedure and Risk Mitigation
The interception procedure allows for the immediate identification of the aircraft’s nature, assessment of potential threats, and, if necessary, corrective actions such as course changes or directing the aircraft to land. These actions minimize the risk of incidents and ensure the safety of both civil and critical infrastructure.
NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission
The control of Russian aviation activity in the region is supported by NATO’s Baltic Air Policing mission, a key element of the Alliance’s defense strategy on its eastern flank. The mission has been continuously operating since 2004.
Its primary task is to protect the airspace of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia, which do not have their own fighter aircraft capable of independently patrolling the skies.
Alliance Solidarity and Readiness
This operation demonstrates allied solidarity and readiness to respond to crises. Polish pilots regularly participate in the mission, often operating from bases in Šiauliai or Ämari as part of the Orlik contingent.
Increased Regional Activity and Deterrence
F-16 fighters and allied aircraft maintain 24/7 readiness for immediate takeoff. Frequent interceptions of Russian aircraft over the Baltic Sea highlight the intensity of Russian aviation activity in the region. Given the tense geopolitical situation, the importance of the Baltic Air Policing mission is greater than ever.
These actions build security in the region and effectively deter potential aggressors from violating NATO borders.
