Polish F-16s intercepted two Russian Su-30 fighter jets, prompting a statement from a deputy defense minister on NATO’s response.
Polish Air Force Intercepts Russian Aircraft
Polish F-16 fighters intercepted two Russian Su-30 aircraft. Deputy Minister of National Defence, Cezary Tomczyk, stated on April 24th that any violation of Polish or regional security will meet with an immediate NATO response.
Provocative Russian Actions
Tomczyk described the actions of the Russian Federation as provocative, testing Poland’s defense systems.
Recent Interceptions of Russian Reconnaissance Aircraft
Earlier in April, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Defence Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz reported that Polish F-16s had intercepted another Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft flying over the Baltic Sea.
Kosiniak-Kamysz assessed that these actions were intended to test Poland’s air defense systems. In the autumn of last year, the Armed Forces Command reported three similar incidents within a week.
Challenges in Identifying Russian Aircraft
Russian reconnaissance aircraft regularly fly over the Baltic Sea with transponders turned off and without filed flight plans, hindering remote identification and air traffic control.
Intercept Procedure
When intercepting aircraft over international waters, identification relies on pilots using optoelectronic systems, visual contact, or establishing communication and escorting the aircraft outside of Polish airspace.
NATO Baltic Air Policing Mission
The NATO Baltic Air Policing mission, involving Polish and allied aircraft, patrols airspace over the Baltic states and the Baltic Sea to monitor Russian aviation activity.
Authority to Shoot Down Hostile Aircraft
In September of last year, journalists questioned Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz about whether pilots would independently decide to shoot down objects entering Polish airspace. Kosiniak-Kamysz stated that the Polish Armed Forces and its commanders are responsible for such decisions.
He emphasized that the military should not publicly discuss orders given to soldiers, but that soldiers should be allowed to make decisions. He also noted that General Maciej Klisz, who authorized the downing of Russian drones over Poland on September 9-10, acted autonomously, without influence from the President or the Minister of Defence.
