Polish FM: Trump’s NATO Comments Cannot Be Ignored

Poland’s Foreign Minister assessed that President Trump’s consideration of withdrawing from NATO is a serious matter, demanding European preparedness.

Trump Considers NATO Withdrawal

US President Donald Trump stated in an interview published Wednesday with the British newspaper “The Telegraph” that he is seriously considering withdrawing the United States from NATO, calling the North Atlantic Alliance a “paper tiger.”

Trump has repeatedly stated that NATO countries should militarily engage in securing the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran has been blocking in retaliation for attacks by Israel and the US.

European Alternatives Under Consideration

The Polish Foreign Minister repeatedly emphasized that Europe must be prepared for various scenarios, including reduced US engagement. He spoke of the need to consider European defense sovereignty, not solely relying on the US.

Sikorski stated in TVN24, “I said that we must consider alternatives.”

NATO as a Transactional Relationship

The Polish politician previously noted that Trump views NATO not as a community of values, but as a business contract, referring to the Alliance as “they” rather than “we.”

International Summit on the Strait of Hormuz

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced Wednesday that the UK will host an international summit later this week dedicated to ensuring freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz, with 35 countries, including Poland, participating.

“We will analyze all realistic diplomatic and political actions we can take to restore freedom of navigation, ensure the safety of trapped ships and sailors, and resume the transport of essential goods,” stated the British Prime Minister. “Following this meeting, we will also convene our military planners to consider how we can organize our forces.”

Strait of Hormuz Closure and Oil Prices

The Strait of Hormuz has been virtually closed by Iran in response to the military operation launched by the US and Israel against the country on February 28th. This action has contributed to a significant increase in crude oil prices on exchanges, as approximately 20% of the world’s oil supply normally transits the strait.
