Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski thanked President Karol Nawrocki for signing 42 ambassadorial nominations on April 1st, but the Presidential Palace claims no such signatures exist.
Presidential Palace Reacts to Sikorski’s Post
The Presidential Palace responded to Sikorski’s post, with the head of the Presidential Bureau of International Politics, Marcin Przydacz, stating he was unaware of the nominations.
Przydacz suggested Sikorski’s post was a joke, comparing it to a prank by Roman Giertych, and noted it was April 1st, a traditional day for jokes.
Origin of the Dispute Over Ambassadorial Nominations
Foreign Minister Sikorski decided on March 13, 2024, to end the missions of over 50 ambassadors and withdraw several candidates nominated by the previous government.
The ministry stated that the government, constitutionally responsible for foreign policy, considered the changes necessary for the better and professional implementation of Poland’s foreign policy challenges.
Duda Previously Refused Appointments
According to TVN24, former President Andrzej Duda refused to appoint new ambassadors, stating that no Polish ambassador could be appointed or recalled without the President’s signature.
The government then decided that diplomats would serve as chargés d’affaires until appointments were made.
Nawrocki’s Objections to Specific Candidates
The situation did not improve when Karol Nawrocki took office, as he has specific objections to two candidates: Ryszard Schnepf and Bogdan Klich.
President Nawrocki stated in June 2025 in an interview with Dziennik Gazeta Prawna that he would not approve their nominations, believing they were unable to serve Poland with dignity.
