Polish Govt Wants to Move Russian Embassy

Poland’s ruling Law and Justice party proposes relocating the Russian embassy from its current location in Warsaw, citing security concerns and the legacy of Stalinism.

Symbolic Legacy of Stalinism

Jarosław Kaczyński, leader of the Law and Justice party (PiS), recalled on Wednesday, September 17, that the Russian embassy is situated on the grounds of the former Ministry of National Defense, near the Belweder and the Prime Minister’s Office.

Kaczyński stated that the decision to locate the embassy in this spot was made during the Stalinist era, and the building was constructed in a characteristic socialist realist style, which also held symbolic significance.

Security Concerns

Mariusz Błaszczak, head of the PiS parliamentary group, added that the resolution aims to ensure counterintelligence protection for key state institutions, including the Ministry of National Defense.

Błaszczak emphasized that hybrid attacks on the border and drone operations are coordinated by the Kremlin, and Poland needs to protect itself not only by developing its army but also by securing objects in the heart of Warsaw.

The Embassy as a Tool of Influence

Marcin Ociepa, a PiS lawmaker, noted that the current location of the embassy is a legacy of the Soviet occupation and should be changed in the name of Polish sovereignty.

Ociepa argued that the embassy serves not only as a diplomatic post but also as a center of activity harmful to the interests of the Republic of Poland.

Next Steps

The draft resolution is set to be included in the agenda of the next Sejm meeting, with PiS politicians expressing confidence that it will gain the support of the parliamentary majority, regardless of current political divisions.
