Polish Institute of Meteorology Predicts No Precipitation Until Christmas

On December 13 the Polish Institute of Meteorology and Water Management released a map showing that no precipitation is expected in the country until Christmas.

No Precipitation Until Christmas

On Saturday, December 13, the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management published a map on social media that shows daily precipitation totals for the next ten days. According to the institute, all precipitation will miss the country until Christmas. The long‑range forecast indicates only light rain, and December 23 is predicted to be the heaviest rain day, with coverage across almost the entire country.

Weather Over the Next Days

Synoptists say that in the coming week Poland will keep an autumn‑like pattern because anticyclones will block rainy fronts and pull exceptionally warm air. Expect a positive temperature. Early in the week thermometers will read around 2–7 °C. From Wednesday, December 17, it will be even warmer – up to 10 °C in the south and partly in the center and west. The north, the northeast, and foggy areas will be a little cooler – 2–4 °C, and frosts will occur at night. A mild frost to –3/–1 °C may appear across the majority of the country, except the coast and western edges. In sub‑alpine valleys temperatures could drop to –5 °C.

Christmas Weather

The European Centre for Medium‑Range Forecasts predicts that during the Christmas period temperatures could fall to zero. Thermometers may read zero in the warmest parts of the country. TVN Meteo, following that model, expects winter evening frosts of up to –3 °C in some areas. The model also forecasts a small amount of snow, mainly in southern Poland, with 3–5 cm of precipitation. Snow probability is highest in the south and east, possible in the center, while the west is expected to be wetter than snowy. Agnieszka Prasek of IMGW notes that the chances of snow are high but that it will also be wet. The GFS model predicts that during the holidays temperatures will remain positive – up to 7–8 °C in the west and south – and only a small chance of snowfall.

Cooler End of December

The long‑range forecast by IMGW experts shows that there will be little cooling after December 22. The average maximum temperature will be 2–4 °C. Colder temperatures are expected especially in the northeast and east. In the mountains temperatures could reach around zero. Larger drops may appear from December 29 onwards. In the center, south and northeast the temperature could fall to zero, and in Suwałki even below. Frost may also appear in the mountains.
